Besides, people who have epilepsy but can’t be controlled with medication are at risk of sudden death. According to the Mayo Clinic, 1 in 1,000 people with epilepsy suffer from sudden death.
Even more, epilepsy can cause brain damage or death. People with epilepsy may fall down and have a head injury during a seizure.
The purpose of epilepsy treatment is to control seizures with the drug at the lowest dose with minimal side effects. Would you like to join hands to assist people with epilepsy? Seizure Smart is here to help you!
Seizure Smart is a program for those who want to know more about epilepsy and how to assist a person during and after a seizure. It is free and anyone can join, from students, teaches to workers, etc.
Participating in Seizure Smart, you will be able to attend many presentations about first aid, different types of epilepsy, and how to respond appropriately to each type. The most interesting thing is that presentations are divided into numerous categories based on ages and jobs.
For example, there are presentations for teachers or childcare workers to assist their students if someone happens to have a convulsive seizure in the classroom. The teacher will know how to support students with epilepsy and to calm down other students. Besides, students attending the presentations will understand more about this disease and thus, control the anxiety and provide appropriate first aid to their friends.
In fact, many students with epilepsy have been reported to be bullied at school by their peers as they do not understand the situation. Also, many employees with epilepsy are reluctant to talk about their diagnosis at workplaces as they are worried about losing the job.
Understanding these problems, many schools and workplaces have organized many Seizure Smart presentations to help students, teachers, and official staff learn more about epilepsy.
During the program, they are provided with many useful pieces of information such as the benefits of hiring an employee with epilepsy, investigations on major organs of the human body system and their functions, or several ways to make the community accept people with epilepsy.
In short, the Seizure Smart is executed to raise awareness of people at schools, workplaces, and other groups as well as reducing the gap between normal people and people with epilepsy. Along with that, the program aims at demystifying this disease for greater empathy.
At present, the Seizure Smart program is available at some places in Ottawa and surrounding rural areas, including some counties like Lanark, Renfrew, Prescott-Russell, Stormont Dundas, and Glengarry.
